Divisional Secretariat - Mihintale

Mihinthale is known as the the cradle of Sri Lankan Buddhist civilization with the arrival of Arihath Mahinda Thero to the Mihinthale. Development of the Sri Lankan Buddhism and the culture began with this. Therefore, Mihinthale has a dominant significance within the other historical cities in Sri Lanka.

Mihinthale town is located Eastern side of the Anuradhapura city. Distance to the Anuradhapura is about 12 km. Mihinthale division is consist with 25 GN divisions while bordered by  Rambawe division on North, Kahatagasdigiliya and Galenbindunuwewa divisions by eastern side, Tirappane division by southern side and Nuwaragam Palatha central and Nuwaragam palatha east from the western side.

Mihinthale division is about 23822 hectares in size and it has around 84 villages within 25 GN divisions. By 2016, population of the Mihinthale division was 35898 and they belonged to 11098 households.  

Mihinthale is located in the dry zone of the Sri Lanka. February, March, June, July, August and September can be considered as driest months through out a year. North Eastern monsoon and intermediate monsoon are the dominant rainfall seasons for the area. Most of land of the division is covered with dry zone forests. Among these, there are some reservations and sanctuaries. These areas are well known for its rich bio diversity with significant flora and fauna.

Agriculture is the dominant income for the people from the division. While paddy cultivation is the major crop being cultivated, corn, vegetables and fruits can be identified as other crops within the division. Except the Agriculture, Fishing is another way of income in some parts of the division.

History of Mihinthale Divisional Secretariat

During the 1975 Mihinthale division was consisted with eight GN divisions and Mr. Edmond Jayasooriya has been appointed as 1^st Assistant Government Agent (AGA) for the Mihinthale. Old Divisional Secretariat building was opened on 1978. 

On 20^th September of 2008, all the office works of the Mihinthale divisional secretariat was shifted into a newly build building which has more space than previous building. Office space has been divided into separate parts according to the sub divisions of a divisional secretariat like Administration Division, Account Division, Planning Division etc. Signs and name boards are fixed to identify the divisions for the people and other stakeholders to who are coming to get some services.

Main Citizen charter is displaying in front of the office and all the divisions has own specified citizen charters which also displayed on each branch. All the facilities have given to the public for an easy access to the office. Specially for the disable people and for old people. Divisions like Social Services, Pension section and Registrar section are located down floor of the office building as different kind of people coming to get services.
